How Wedding Planning Has Changed in the Last 10 Years From Guest Lists to Groomsmen Attire—What’s Different in 2025..

If you’ve been around weddings for a while (like I have!), you’ve probably noticed how much has shifted over the past decade. Trends come and go, but some changes in wedding planning feel more like a total evolution than a passing phase. Whether you’re newly engaged or knee-deep in planning, here are some of the biggest changes I’ve seen in the last 10 years—and how couples are reimagining their big day in 2025.

1. Smaller, More Intentional Guest Lists

Gone are the days of inviting everyone you know. Guest lists are getting smaller—but more meaningful.
A few reasons why:

  • Budget awareness – With rising costs in catering, rentals, and more, every guest adds up.
  • Post-2020 mindset – The pandemic taught us that intimate weddings can be just as (if not more) special.
  • Simplified planning – Fewer people = fewer logistics and more time with those who matter most.

Couples today are focusing on quality over quantity, making their celebrations feel personal, thoughtful, and deeply connected.

2. Photography Expectations Have Changed—Fast!

Let’s talk about photos. The quality of wedding photography continues to improve with new technology, editing techniques, and artistic direction. But here’s what’s really changed: the turnaround time.

We live in an instant world—so it’s no surprise that fast photo sneak peeks are now a must. Many photographers now offer same-week previews or deliver large sneak peeks within days of the wedding. This is such a fun way for couples to relive their day (and share it on social) while they wait for the full gallery!

3. Bye Bye Burlap… But Baby’s Breath Stays

If you were planning weddings in 2014, you know: burlap was everywhere. From table runners to chair sashes, rustic reigned supreme.

In 2025, burlap is officially out—but surprisingly, baby’s breath is still in. When styled well, baby’s breath can feel dreamy, modern, and even luxurious. It’s often used as a floral filler or even on its own in monochrome installations. The key is intention and design—not just sprinkling it everywhere.

4. Mix-and-Match Attire Is the New Standard

Uniform bridesmaid dresses and matching tuxedos used to be the go-to. Today? Mix-and-match everything.

Bridesmaids are wearing different:

  • Styles
  • Fabrics
  • Colors

And the groomsmen? Some aren’t even in full suits. Think mix-and-match blazers, open collars, or coordinated patterns instead of carbon copies.

This approach lets each person feel comfortable, express themselves, and adds a dynamic look to your photos.

5. More Venue Options Than Ever (Especially in Indiana!)

If you’re planning a wedding in Indiana, you’ve probably noticed this: venue options have exploded. From rustic barns to industrial-chic warehouses, garden estates to lakeside clubs, there’s something for every vibe.

And with more options, couples are getting creative with how they use the space—indoor/outdoor transitions, lounge setups, or even full weekend wedding experiences.

Bonus: Some venues now offer all-in-one packages, making planning easier and more seamless.

6. Vendor Teams Have Grown (For the Better)

A decade ago, it wasn’t uncommon to see a cousin handling the playlist or an aunt helping with setup. While there’s still room for family involvement, today’s couples are choosing to invest in professional vendor teams—and it makes a huge difference.

Hiring experts for photography, coordination, design, florals, catering, and entertainment means:

  • A smoother day
  • Fewer surprises
  • Guests (and family!) actually get to enjoy the celebration

Couples are realizing: Your people came to celebrate, not to work.

7. Weekday Weddings and Multi-Day Celebrations Are on the Rise

Thanks to venue demand (and post-2020 rescheduling chaos), weekday weddings have become more common—especially Thursdays and Fridays. Not only do they often come with cost savings, but they give couples flexibility with popular vendors and venues.

Plus, we’re seeing more multi-day celebrations: welcome parties, post-wedding brunches, and full weekend itineraries to maximize time with guests—especially for destination or out-of-town weddings.

8. Personalization is Everything

From custom cocktails named after their dog to handwritten vows and unique guest favors, today’s weddings are all about telling the couple’s story.

Some popular personalized touches include:

  • Custom signage with meaningful quotes or sayings
  • Guest books that double as keepsakes (like a phone voicemail or audio recording)
  • Playlists built from guest song requests on RSVPs
  • Ceremony scripts written by or with loved ones

No two weddings feel the same anymore—and that’s the beauty of it.

Weddings today are more personal, more thoughtful, and more creative than ever. As a wedding planner who’s been in the industry for over a decade, I love seeing how each couple brings their own style and priorities into the planning process.

Here’s to celebrating love—whether you’re throwing a 250-person party or an intimate dinner with your closest crew.

Happy Wedding Planning!
